What's a Float Tank?
Think of a float tank as simply an optimized environment in which to meditate. The tank environment reduces sensory input (light, sound, smell, touch, etc) and that allows the mind and body to relax and take a break from their day job.
No LightA float tank is a room within a room. The outer room lets in very little light and the inner room (the lid or door of the tank) creates a pitch black environment when the lights are shut off. You can also leave the lights on if you prefer.
No SoundEver try to meditate when there are dogs barking or car horns honking right outside the window? Our 8" thick, rock wool insulated, soundproofed rooms will stop almost all of that. Or, choose from a selection of meditation music.
No Gravity - 1,200 lbs of Epsom Salt1,200 pounds of Epsom Salt dissolved in 12" of water provides density and allows the user to float effortlessly along the surface of the water. This low-gravity environment naturally takes pressure off aching joints and muscles.
Not Hot or Cold - 93.5 DegreesFloat tanks are heated to slightly above skin temperature. The solution should feel warm and comfortable and over the time of your float, feel like nothing at all. The air is also heated to match the water and dissolves completely.

History of Float Therapy
Dr. John C Lilly |
The first tank was designed in 1954 by John C. Lilly, an American physician and neuroscientist. He designed the tank to study the origins of consciousness by cutting off all external stimuli.
His research took a controversial turn in the 1960s. That’s when he began experimenting with sensory deprivation while under the effects of LSD, a hallucinogenic, and ketamine, a fast-acting anesthetic that is known for its ability to sedate and create a trance-like state. In the 1970s, commercial float tanks were created and began being studied for possible health benefits. These days, finding a sensory deprivation tank is easy, with float centers and spas offering float therapy all over the world. |
Resurgence of Sensory Deprivation Tanks
Sensory Deprivation tanks, available for commercial use since the 1970s, never really caught on until the early 2000s and probably benefited from the overall growth in the health and wellness industry. Now, over 500 float centers exist worldwide. 70% of new float center owners heard about floating from one place - Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan is an avid user and host of the most popular podcast of all time. Joe Rogan basically created the modern float tank market.

What does 1,000 pounds of Epsom Salt look like?
20 x 50 pound bags of Epsom Salt [PC: FLOAT MADISON]
|
Each of our tanks holds over 1,000 pounds of pharmaceutical grade Epsom Salt. All this Epsom Salt makes the water so dense that you can float on top of it, like the Dead Sea or the Great Salt Lake (but even saltier).
Epsom Salt is just Magnesium Sulfate chemically speaking and it can be absorbed through the skin. This allows the body to uptake all that magnesium and that has huge benefits. As much as 75% of the population of the US is not getting the recommended amount of magnesium and that can lead to major health complications like fatigue, mental illness and insomnia. [...] |
