What Is Float Therapy?

A float tank is a big, enclosed tub filled with warm water, and saturated with 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt. The density of the salty water supports every inch of your body, allows you to float effortlessly, and feel weightless.

Here’s how it works...

1. Private Room with Shower and Changing Area
Each of our float tanks is located inside its own private room with a door that locks. There’s a shower in each room, so you can shower before and after your session.

2. Everything You Need Is Provided
When you show up for your appointment, all you have to bring is yourself. We’ll provide earplugs, towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. And one of our attendants will walk you through the whole process and answer any questions you have.

3. Light Controls
There is a big button inside the tank that controls the lights. Most people float with the lights out, but it’s totally within your control. You can even switch back and forth throughout your session. The lights will come on when your session ends.

4. Sound Control
Right next to the light button, is another that controls the sound. When your session begins, we’ll play some relaxing music through the underwater speakers in the tank. One click will turn the sound off. Another click will set the music to low. Another click sets the music on medium. Another click for high. And one more to turn it off again.

5. Temperature Controlled Water
The water inside the tank is heated to approximately 94.0 Degrees Fahrenheit, which is just a little warmer than the surface of your skin. After a little while, your skin temperature will normalize and you won’t be able to feel the water at all.

6. 1,200 Pounds of Epsom Salt
1,200 pounds of Epsom Salt are dissolved in the tank solution. It becomes so dense that you effortlessly float along the surface of the water, it supports every inch of your body evenly, allowing you to completely relax.

7. Temperature Controlled Air
The air inside the chamber is heated to the same temperature as the water. After a while, the difference between the air temperature and water temperature will melt away, leaving you feeling like you’re floating in space.

8. State of the Art Filtration Unit
Each of our float tanks has its own filtration unit that automatically cleans the tank solution in between each appointment. Each filtration unit has a 1 micron bag filter, an Ozone filter, and a UV Filter (plus the water is treated with Hydrogen Peroxide), so you can be certain the tank solution is cleaner than any pool you've ever been in.

7 Key Benefits of Float Therapy for People with Anxiety

Watch Dr. Justin Feinstein discuss the results of his study on the anti-anxiety properties of Float Therapy conducted at the Laureate Institute for Brain Research.
1. Reduces Anxiety and Depression symptoms
Several studies have found that float therapy can lead to a reduction in anxiety symptoms. One study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in 2018 found that participants who underwent float therapy experienced a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Another study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2016 found that float therapy was effective in reducing anxiety and stress in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder.

2. Relieves Stress and muscle tension
Another study published in the International Journal of Stress Management in 2018 found that participants who underwent float therapy experienced significant reductions in both stress and muscle tension. There is some evidence to suggest that float therapy may help to reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the body in response to stress.

4. Calms the mind and increases ability to focus
A study published in the Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science in 2017 found that participants who underwent float therapy experienced significant improvements in mental clarity and focus. A 2016 study found that float therapy could improve cognitive function.

5. Promotes feelings of wellbeing and improves quality of life
Several studies have found that float therapy can lead to improvements in feelings of wellbeing. The 2016 study found that float therapy was effective in improving quality of life in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder. Another study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in 2018 found that participants who underwent float therapy experienced significant improvements in overall mood and wellbeing.

6. Relieves muscle tension
You might notice that when your stress levels are high, you carry tension in your neck, face, and back. Stress can cause muscles to tense and become “stuck”, pulling the body out of alignment and causing further pain. However, when that stress is relieved, those muscles have the opportunity to relax.

7. Improves sleep and boosts energy
Several studies have found that float therapy can lead to improvements in sleep. For example, a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research in 2018 found that participants who underwent float therapy experienced significant improvements in both subjective and objective measures of sleep quality. Another study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2016 found that float therapy was effective in reducing insomnia symptoms and improving sleep quality in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder.
